Service Description

This course introduces participants to the Orton-Gillingham multisensory reading approach and how it is used in the classroom. The course follows the curriculum and guidelines of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (link to AOGPE). The instructional approach is intended primarily for persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia and related learning disabilities. Upon completion of the practicum, trainees will be able to work with students in a classroom or small group using the Orton-Gillingham Approach. A Bachelor’s degree, 30 hours of coursework, reading summaries, practicum hours, and five observations completed by a Fellow are required. The course is targeted towards teachers, speech and language pathologists, advocates, parents, and teaching assistants. Topics include: Phonological and Phonemic Awareness; Phonics; Reading Fluency; Vocabulary; Reading Comprehension; The Orton-Gillingham Approach’s seminal works; Brain Research and Reading; The Orton-Gillingham Approach versus Orton-Gillingham Based Programs; the Orton-Gillingham Principles of Instruction; Knowledge and Structure of the English Language; Development of the Orton-Gillingham Lesson Plan for Group and Classroom Settings; Remote Learning Lesson Plans and Strategies. Please note: Prior to the start of the course, students will need to purchase the following course materials: "A Guide to Teaching Phonics" by June Lyday Orton, and "Language Tool Kit" by Paula Rome and Jean Osman.


Cancelation Policy

All Courses: Should you need to cancel your registration, please do so at least 48-hours prior to the start date for the course. A partial refund will be provided. You will receive a refund of 97.1% of the cost of the course to account for processing fees. For example, if you pay $1,000 for a course and cancel your registration at least 48-hours in advance, you will receive a refund of $971. No refunds will be provided after the start of a course. If you are unable to attend as planned, you will receive full credit towards the same course at a future date. Practicum Observations: The 48-hour policy does not apply. However, should you encounter a scheduling conflict, please reschedule your appointment as efficiently as possible.
